Salmon Flies are everywhere and the fish are taking any opportunity to grab them off of the surface. We have seen them from the mouth of the canyon, to Shenoah camp ground. It was a slow start this morning but the fishing really picked up later in the day. This week is definitely a great week to take a day off of work or a sick day…
We were using a variety of different Salmon Fly patterns. The Sofa Pillow was a great pattern this weekend. Any big hopper, or Chubby Chernobyl will do the trick.
A lot of the strikes were coming at the end of the run. Make sure to let your fly exit the pocket completely. Today, when I went to pull my fly out of the water to cast, I had a fish strike. Be patient and wait for that indecisive trout to rise!
The river is still running high, and the fish are hanging out in anything they can get. With the rough current, I like to high stick my fly. Right when your fly hits the water, lift your rod. This will help the fly stay on the surface of the water and keep it from being submerged by the current. Lightly dragging a Salmon Fly pattern across the surface of the water works great, to force a trout to strike.
I love getting my flies caught in trees. Whenever I get snagged up in trees or brush, I like to test my leader connection to the fly. I have lost a lot of flies from weak line after getting it caught in trees. Always test the strength in your leader before casting to a fish. Very frustrating loosing flies to a fish!
If you have been waiting to throw big dry flies, now is the time to fish! Get up there ASAP and go get a greedy trout! Be safe out there and have fun.
